Zelle Scams Aren’t Refunded Like Card Fraud

    Just the Tip:

Send Zelle only to people you know in person. A payment usually lands within minutes, and if you authorized it yourself, even to a scammer, federal law doesn’t require your bank to give it back. Pay a marketplace seller or any other stranger with a credit card, which you can dispute if nothing arrives.

The request to use Zelle usually comes from a stranger in a hurry, like a marketplace seller who will hold concert tickets only if you pay today. An out-of-state landlord collecting a deposit on a rental you haven’t toured asks for it too. Zelle offers no purchase protection and tells users not to pay for items from online sales sites with it.

Whether the money comes back depends on how it left. If someone got into your account and sent it, the transfer is unauthorized, and federal Regulation E requires your bank to investigate and limits your loss when you report it promptly. That holds even if a caller tricked you into reading off a login code. If you pressed send yourself, the payment counts as authorized, and the law requires no refund, even when you were lied to.

The exception is narrow. Since mid-2023, banks on the Zelle network have reimbursed qualifying imposter scams, where someone posing as your bank, a government agency, or a company you already pay talked you into sending money. That’s a network policy applied case by case, not a legal right.

So keep Zelle for family, friends, coworkers, and others you know in person. Never move money to “yourself” because a caller says your account is under attack. The account they give you is theirs. Pay strangers with a credit card, which gives you the right to dispute a charge for goods that never arrive. PayPal works too when you pay as a purchase rather than a personal payment, because purchases can qualify for its Purchase Protection.

If a payment still goes wrong, act within the hour. Call your bank at the number on your card, not one a caller gave you, and report the payment in the app too. If the person claimed to be your bank, a government agency, or a company you already pay, tell the bank it was an imposter scam, because that’s the category the reimbursement covers.

If you wouldn’t hand the person cash, don’t send them Zelle.
